UNION
Bringing together different British cultural pass-times, Football chant traditions, Ballet, Acting, Folk song & VFX to create an ambitious and visceral portrait of Britain in moving image.
visualisation moodboard
Visual language from the 'Dreamer' and 'Surfer' Guinness adverts by Johnathan Glazer that captured the nation. Gritty, surreal and very textural.
The film has no dialogue but is narrated by a song sung by a crowd that stretches as far as the eye can see. 4 dancers are raised above the ground (like crowd surfing) and take turns dancing for the adulation of the crowd. If they are unsuccessful, they will be dragged down never to be seen again.
With this as a backdrop we follow a young couple who are sepperated as they are hoisted up to dance. They will do anything to return to each other.
The relationship between the dancers and the crowd explore Britains history of class and privilege as well as the legacies of fame and fortune in unequal societies.
I'm interested in how these cultural languages can come together to create something with potential to feel engaging across previously impenetrable cultural barriers.

Work
I am a British Artist of mixed Ghanian, English and Scottish heritage working primarily in moving image, sculpture and performance .
Constantly moving while growing up between London, Cambridge, Wiltshire, Ghana & Jamaica, I became interested in the things that bring different, often opposing communities together.
My practice is based on examining my personal or communal shortcomings as a way to encourage healing discourse, with particular interest in masculine violence, nationhood and intergenerational trauma.
This approach can be seen in my Arts Council England funded works Chainmail 1, 2 & 3 that received international acclaim and explored my homophobic upbringing, my fascination with war & violence in cinema while loosing people to knife crime In.
I have successfully managed Arts Council funded projects over the years, growing in size and ambition and feel it is the right time in my career to take on a project like UNION.
With such incredible support from institutions such as the Scottish Ballet, ACCA and BCU to individuals such as Phil Minton and Miriam Margolyes, I feel that this project has the potential to create lasting impact for audiences and collaborators as well as my practice.
To date my work has been shown with institutions such as the V&A, TRAMWAY Glasgow, Autograph ABP, Film and Video Umbrella, ACCA Sussex and the PowerPlant Toronto.
