Behind the scenes of Chainmail 2. Film by Adenike Oke
The Chainmail Series is a collection of films, documenting ceremonies in which a close friend or family member of Amartey's, is adorned in heavy chainmail garments as they partake in a bespoke ceremony in front of an audience. The garments take months to make and weigh more than wearer, so far weighing between 65 and 167 Kilos.
Chainmail, was originally used as armour to protect the wearer in battle long enough to be able to kill their opponent, symbolising both the prevention of death and the ending of life. It is this contradiction and the different, often seemingly mundane ways it relates to the contemporary context that the films and ceremonies are built on.
